Here's a quick update as to what I've been up to. In anticipation for the effects-heavy short film planned for 2010, I've been learning more about physical prop making. From weapons to armor to vehicle interiors etc.
Trying to get a grasp of the sculpting / moldmaking / casting process is actually a lot more fun than trying to troubleshoot a 3d model or rig. It feels like you're actually creating something, rather than just ones and zeros that appear only on screen.
Also found a company called Shapeways that does affordable 3D printing. I almost bought a mini lathe to create my oversized bullet casings, but soon realized that I could create it in 3D and have the prototype printed. Then I could mold and cast duplicates myself using Smooth-On Inc's array of mold + casting materials.
Anyhoo, more updates to come. Check out the two companies mentioned above for more info.
